JINEN Butoh opens the body as a living presence between earth, nature, and human existence. In this workshop, participants explore the body as part of the cycle of life through the image of a flower that grows from the soil, blooms, and returns to the earth.
Rather than learning choreography, participants awaken the body through elements such as rain, wind, sunlight, air, and the atmosphere of the place. Dance emerges from the body’s relationship with the surrounding environment, allowing participants to rediscover life as part of a continuous living cycle.
The workshop will be accompanied by live soundscape music performed by Hiroko Komiya.
Atsushi Takenouchi (director, Butoh dancer, choreographer) began his Butoh journey in 1980 with the Hoppo-Butoh-ha company in Hokkaido. His final work with the company, Takazashiki (1984), was created under the direct guidance of Butoh founder Tatsumi Hijikata. In 1986, he launched his independent path and developed Jinen Butoh, a practice rooted in nature, the earth, and ancient memory.
From 1996 to 1999, he undertook a three-year Jinen tour across Japan, performing more than 600 site-specific improvisations in natural landscapes and sacred places. During this period, he was deeply influenced by the spiritual universe of Kazuo Ohno and Yoshito Ohno.
Since 2002, Takenouchi has been active internationally, continuously developing his work along two parallel paths: presenting solo Butoh performances worldwide, while also transmitting Jinen Butoh through workshops and collaborative projects with dancers and actors across Europe and beyond.
His artistic activity extends into film, notably Ridden by Nature, a multi-award-winning environmental art dance film by Kiah Keya. From 2015 to 2020, he directed an intensive Jinen Butoh school in Italy, while continuing to perform internationally as a solo artist.
Today, he remains fully engaged in both creation and transmission: performing his solo Butoh works internationally and leading seasonal intensive workshops held in natural environments and studio spaces. In 2021, he published the book Atsushi Takenouchi: Jinen Butoh, which documents his artistic path, workshop practice, and performance works (Pomka & the Polish National Institute of Music and Dance).
Hiroko Komiya (composer, musician) is a sound artist who transforms ephemeral elements—air, space, movement, bodily sensation, and memory—into expansive sonic expressions that move beyond conventional melody and rhythm.
Since 1999, she has been the principal musical collaborator for Atsushi Takenouchi’s JINEN Butoh, providing live music for his performances and workshops worldwide.
Her artistic practice extends beyond Butoh into multidisciplinary collaborations with filmmakers, sculptors, painters, poets, costume designers, and performers, contributing to performances, exhibitions, and installations.
In 2022, she performed an 11-hour tribute performance to Félix Guattari in Paris, together with Ramuntcho Matta’s art music collective and Atsushi Takenouchi.
In recent years, she has been collaborating with U.S. film and sound artist Chris H. Lynn on audiovisual performances with Butoh dancer Atsushi Takenouchi, often featuring guest performers. These works have been presented internationally at venues and festivals including the Hybrid Butoh Vienna Art Festival (2022), Warsaw (2023), Barcelona (2023), Mexico (2024), Hong Kong (2024), Athens (2025), Japan (2025), Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (2025), the Seattle International Butoh Festival (2025), Glasgow, Scotland (2026), and the Inter Asian Performance Festival in South Korea (2026).
