Tomonosuke Tsuruzawa (born 1980), Bunraku Shamisen player, Bunrakuza-company
He grew up in a family of classical musicians and was familiar with Western music from an early age. Before encountering the shamisen, he played instruments such as the double bass and guitar, developing a natural affinity for deep, resonant sounds. He made his stage debut in 2002.
Drawing on his distinctive musical background and steady discipline, he has cultivated a powerful and expressive tone. Known for his clarity, precision, and emotional depth, he continues to take on a wide range of repertoire and engages actively with audiences through performance and outreach. With his diverse musical experience and sincere dedication, he is regarded as one of the promising shamisen players who will help shape the future of Bunraku.
Tamasuke Yoshida V (born 1966) , Bunraku puppeteer, Bunrakuza-company
In the Bunraku world—where hereditary succession is uncommon—he comes from a rare three-generation family line. He entered the tradition in 1980 and later succeeded to the name Tamasuke Yoshida V in 2018, reviving this distinguished title after 53 years.
Renowned for his refined technique and broad expressive range, he performs roles from the commanding Benkei in Kanjinchō to the lyrical Tokubei in The Love Suicides at Sonezaki. Beyond classical repertoire, he is also noted for his forward-looking approach, actively engaging with new artistic forms—including pioneering collaborations with Vocaloid technology. He is widely regarded as one of the leading figures shaping the next generation of Bunraku.
