Digital Stage in June: Two Premieres Exploring the Human Condition and the Beauty of Cultural Traditions

In June, as the 32nd edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival approaches, Digital Stage – the online platform for theatre, film, music, circus, and dance created by TNRS and FITS – presents two new premieres that offer distinct perspectives on the contemporary world: a profound reflection on exile and identity, and a journey into the universe of traditional Chinese music.

The June premieres on Digital Stage are:

1. “The Emigrants” by Sławomir Mrożek, directed by Dan Glasu

One of the most renowned plays by the Polish playwright Sławomir Mrożek, The Emigrants tells the story of two immigrants sharing the same modest living space on New Year’s Eve: a politically exiled intellectual and a laborer working abroad to support his family.

Directed by Dan Glasu, with set design by Alin Gavrilă, the production features Alexandru Malaicu and Horia Fedorca. The play explores, with clarity and bitter humor, themes such as alienation, uprootedness, freedom, the need to belong, and the fragility of human identity.

“The performance is an exercise in revealing a world marked by the tragic nature of human existence within the framework of contemporary society. The struggle for existence and survival takes on the form of grotesque tragedy, unfolding between despair and hope, at the intersection of ‘being’ and ‘having’,” says director Dan Glasu.

2. “What Is Qin: Tang Dynasty—The Lonely Smoke Straight” – Zi De Guqin Studio (China)

The second premiere of the month brings to Digital Stage one of the most acclaimed ensembles dedicated to promoting China’s traditional musical heritage. Founded in 2014, Zi De Guqin Studio brings together young musicians committed to reintroducing the beauty and refinement of classical Chinese culture to contemporary audiences.

The performance offers an encounter with the guqin, one of China’s oldest and most revered musical instruments, long associated with scholars and the country’s great cultural traditions. By blending traditional music with an aesthetic inspired by historical Chinese paintings and costumes, the artists create a remarkable visual and sonic experience that has captivated millions of viewers around the world.

The production invites audiences on a fascinating journey through the artistic universe of the Tang Dynasty, offering an authentic perspective on an exceptional cultural heritage.
