Bunraku Today: A living tradition
Embassy of Japan in Romania / Bunrakuza-company Japonia

Have you ever imagined breathing life into a beautifully crafted puppet? Welcome to the world of Bunraku, Japan's breathtaking traditional puppet theater, and one of humanity's most treasured performing arts.

In this immersive workshop, you will step behind the curtain and into the heart of a 400-year-old tradition.

Born in the vibrant city of Osaka in the early 1600s, Bunraku is a performing art unlike any other. Each puppet stands roughly two-thirds the size of a human and is so intricately designed that it can raise an eyebrow, shed a tear, or glance shyly to the side. At the same time, a passionate narrator gives voice to every character on stage, while a shamisen musician weaves a spell of sound that carries the audience deep into the story. It is theater. It is music. It is sculpture in motion. In 2003, UNESCO recognized Bunraku as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Please come to learn the Living Tradtion of Bunraku Today!!
