“Betrayal” is a 1978 play by Harold Pinter that explores love, infidelity, secrecy, and emotional deception. The story centers on a seven-year affair between Emma, a married woman, and Jerry, the best friend of her husband, Robert. Both Emma and Jerry betray their spouses, while the affair also damages the friendship between the two men.
What makes the play especially striking is its reverse chronology. It begins in 1977, after the affair has already ended, and gradually moves backward in time to 1968, when the relationship first begins. As the audience moves into the past, the truth behind the characters’ lies, silences, and betrayals becomes clearer.
Through sparse dialogue and subtle tension, Pinter reveals not only adultery between lovers and spouses, but also self-deception and betrayal within friendship and marriage. The play is widely regarded as one of Pinter’s most important works because of its innovative structure and its powerful portrayal of human relationships.
A sharp, intimate exploration of love, lies, and the quiet fractures of betrayal.
