Levente Bagossy

Exhibition of stage designs

The Liszt Institute in Bucharest presents a unique exhibition featuring stage design models created by award-winning scenographer Levente Bagossy, recipient of the prestigious Jászai Mari Prize.

The exhibition was first presented in Bucharest in November 2022 as a companion event to the National Theatre Festival and has since travelled extensively across Romania, including presentations in Timișoara, Arad, Oradea, Târgu Mureș, Odorheiu Secuiesc, Miercurea Ciuc, and Sfântu Gheorghe.

The exhibition brings together 20 miniature stage design models selected from Bagossy’s remarkable 30-year career. Visitors will discover models created for productions such as Don Giovanni, The Bourgeois Gentleman, Tartuffe, and Raise the Curtain!, staged by some of Hungary’s most important theatre institutions. Conceived as works of applied art, these models were originally developed as scenographic proposals and evoke the magic of the Guckkastenbühne—the “box stage” that allows audiences to observe and experience human lives and stories as if through a magnifying glass.

The exhibition opens in the presence of artist Levente Bagossy and KÓSA András László, Director of the Liszt Institute in Bucharest.
Born in 1968 in Dombóvár, Hungary, Levente Bagossy studied graphic design at the Secondary School of Arts in Pécs and graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 1996. He began his scenographic career at the Pécs Little Theatre and later collaborated with theatres in Pécs, Kecskemét, Szeged, and Nyíregyháza. His most significant works have been created for leading Hungarian theatre institutions, including Centrál Theatre, Katona József Theatre, Örkény Theatre, and Radnóti Theatre in Budapest.

Throughout his career, Bagossy has received numerous distinctions, including the Jászai Mari Prize (2008), the Hevesi Sándor Prize (2011), multiple Theatre Critics’ Awards, and several international awards for outstanding scenography at festivals in Poland, Croatia, Serbia, and Hungary. His work is celebrated for its visual imagination, architectural precision, and enduring contribution to contemporary stage design.
