In a detention facility in nowadays The Hague, a pro bono lawyer interviews her client, a Japanese citizen, in preparation for the preliminary hearing scheduled for the next day. Yuki-san had worked in a Japanese prison as a master chef. In this role, he prepared and served the final meal of a death row inmate (an American citizen), who had requested fugu sushi. For reasons he himself cannot initially explain, Yuki made a fatal mistake during the preparation process, and the inmate died of tetrodotoxin poisoning (the lethal substance found in pufferfish) more than an hour before the scheduled execution time.
The court in The Hague is set to determine his guilt or innocence, the charge being that he shortened the life of a condemned prisoner by 72 minutes prior to her execution. Driven by strong professional ambition, the lawyer makes every effort to build her case. However, Yuki-san does not cooperate—or at least not in the way we would expect; not according to Western standards.
During this interview, two worlds intersect intermittently, and the ending brings a twist that leaves everything suspended in ambiguity, opening the door to multiple possible outcomes.
A subtle theatrical thriller in which guilt and truth dissolve into a moral enigma with no clear answers.
