Octavian Saiu in dialog with Po-Cheng Tsai, Gigi Căciuleanu and Gilda Lazăr
Romania

Po Cheng, TSAI: a professional dance artist, is the founder and current artistic director of B.DANCE.

After graduating from Tsoying Senior High School, he went to Taipei National University of the Arts. During his university days, he got a scholarship to go to Purchase College, New York for exchange and learning. His works are often based on his own life experiences, perceptual, supplicated, but still humorous, with unique dance languages and treacherous and changeable styles. He often integrates theatres, dance, and extreme limb movements in his works.

From 2014 to 2019, he presented original works to the international dance community, making a significant mark in the field with his debut piece "Floating Flowers," which served as a milestone. He garnered high acclaim, receiving 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal from various choreography competitions worldwide. After returning to Taiwan, he founded his own dance company, B.- DANCE. In 2016, he established the "B.OOM by B.DANCE" project, facilitating international performance collaborations by inviting renowned independent choreographers and dancers from Europe to Taiwan for performances and workshops. He has consistently endeavored to guide his team with innovative thinking and diverse perspectives, aiming to foster deeper dialogue between arts, education, and society. This is how he has contributed to our community through action. In 2018, the German magazine "tanz" named Tsai as one of the most promising young choreographers globally for 2017/2018. In 2019, he led his dance troupe to two major international arts festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Festival Off Avignon. In 2020, he was recognized as the "Best Emerging Choreographer" by the France National Board of Performance Arts, and in 2021, he was honored as one of Taiwan's "Ten Outstanding Young Persons.”

In recent years, Tsai has invested significant effort in the international market. Despite the global lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, he remained connected with the world through online dance theaters and the production of several dance video works. He not only showcased the abundant creative power of Taiwan's original works but also received invitations from various groups and organizations worldwide, including theaters in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Taiwan, to serve as a guest choreographer.

After the global pandemic, Tsai once again led B.DANCE on a European tour in 2022. The following year, they performed at the renowned historical heritage site, the ancient theater, built since the first century, at the Festival Vaison Danses, to an audience of over 2,000, receiving thunderous applause. They then graced the stages of the Festival Nuits de la Citadelle, set in a castle with over half a century of history, and the Cannes International Dance Festival, established since 1985. To date, B.DANCE has performed in 27 countries, 114 cities, and 315 shows. In 2024, B,DANCE underwent brand reform, aiming to transition towards a high-end boutique brand, marking a new trend in Taiwan's performing arts scene.

The latest creation is a brand new production of "Don Quixote" set to debut at the Bern Theatre in Switzerland on May 3, 2024
