1936, Gertrude Stein returns to her apartment in Paris. Sitting alongside her companion Alice Toklas, she looks at the Picasso paintings of circus performers on her walls and has an idea to write a play. “Listen to Me,” she says to Alice, who transcribes Stein’s vision. Stein envisions the circus shows with horses she saw as a child. Her friends – Picasso, Hemingway, Josephine Baker – are characters in Stein’s surreal play. Listening to the cadence of the horses and her characters, Stein discerns the rhythm of 1936: a conflict of opposed forces has begun to escalate into battles worldwide.
An alternative history of the last century through an exceptional revisiting of some of the greatest minds of modern art.
