On Hope

Placing art objects where they are least expected is very much in line with my personal approach.
We live our lives on small stages that follow one another and interlock along a horizon line that has no beginning and no end. I have set my small-scale scenario within the white cube, with the horizon line continuing tangibly inside and invisibly outside.
My proposal presents a contemporary variation on subject of sunrise.

For the past two years, I have been exploring the theme of hope in my painting, which manifests itself in a multitude of small-format sunrises. At the bottom of the canvas are black inscriptions with black ideas, which will be covered by a layer of opaque black up to the horizon line.
Above the horizon, the incredible colors of sunrises; that I have seen with my own eyes are unchained, each more real than the last—a reality that will always surpass fiction.

This eternal sun-cycle is a lesson in humility that leads us toward contemplation and acceptance of our own biotope among all the others.

Paula ANKE lives and works in the Cévennes (FR) and in Berlin (DE). She studied art from 1983 to 1990 in Brussels (ERG/Saint Luc), at the Ecole Goetz Daderian in Paris, and in Perpignan with Jeanne Gerardin. In 1991, she was awarded a postgraduate scholarship at the HDK (now UdK) in Berlin. Paula’s main areas of focus are painting, assemblage, printmaking, fresco, installation, and video. Her work engages with the legacy of the Surrealists, Dadaists, Nouveaux Réalistes, Robert Rauschenberg, and Alexander Camaro. The construction of femininity and the staging of memory form the central themes of her work. Paula regularly participates in exhibitions both in Germany and abroad. In 2024, her exhibition La tenue d'Ève, together with Karen LaMonte, was shown at the Musée Henri-Martin in Cahors, France. Other exhibitions include: Amazones de l'Ombre, Paula Anke, ECAM, Théâtre du Kremlin-Bicêtre; Zwischenräume, installation and video, Paula Anke hosted by AJLART, Anna Jill Lüpertz Gallery Berlin; and Paula Anke Peintures, Assemblages et Installations, Petit Temple, Ganges (France).
