The Volunteer Programme developed within FITS is perhaps the largest non-formal educational programme based on selection, volunteering and training in the field of performing arts and cultural management. The FITS Volunteer Programme was born within the framework of the Sibiu European Capital of Culture 2007 Programme.
Every year, around 500 volunteers from all over the world, trained and matched according to personal and professional preferences, take part in organising and streamlining festival events. In addition to local and national volunteers, international volunteers join in year after year, building a community of over 200 volunteers from countries such as Bulgaria, Canada, Iran, Japan, France, Georgia, Germany, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Turkey and Hungary. In this enterprise, FITS has collaborated with a number of partners for recruiting them, such as European Capitals of Culture, SPAF (Seoul Performing Arts Festival, the most important performing arts scholarship in Asia), Eu-Japan Fest or Takayama City Hall (twinned city with Sibiu since 2012), through STEP project (Sibiu - Takayama Exchange Project). In 2023 Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan became a partner of the programme, facilitating the access of Japanesse volunteers to the experience offered by both the festival and the city of Sibiu.
The structure associated with the festival operates in accordance with the stipulations of the law no. 78/2014 on the regulation of voluntary activity in Romania; at the end of the period, each participant receives a certificate attesting to the achievement of certain specific professional skills, as a result of the participation in theoretical and practical courses, designed by the programme coordinators.
