The Strindberg Sonata
Performance by: Grete Linz
Freiburger Schauspielschule
Germany

“There is no more diabolical comedy in literature than his marital experiences, his addiction to women and his horror of them, his sacred monogamous worship and glorification of marriage and his complete inability to endure it.” (Thomas Mann)
The literary and artistic work of August Strindberg (1849 – 1912) is deeply influenced by his psychotic disposition and his failed marriages.
“The Strindberg Sonata”, based on Strindberg’s autobiographical novel “Plädoyer eines Irren” and Frida Uhl’s “Lieb, Leid und Zeit”, examines scenes from his marriages with Siri von Essen and Frida Uhl, as possible sources of inspiration for his masterpiece “Miss Julie”.

Crazy, playful, passionate, extroverted – an excursion into the depths of Strindberg’s soul.
