The Stone Bridge
Performance by: Akihiro Yamamoto
Yamamoto Noh Theater
Japan

This celebratory dance, often presented as a standalone performance, forms the second act of the Noh play “Shakkyo”. It vividly portrays the enigmatic Shakkyo stone bridge, a link between the earthly realm of humans and the sacred Pure Land of Bodhisattva Monju. Adorned with blooming peonies, this bridge is guarded by two mythical Shishi beasts, blending features of dogs and lions. Within this serene setting, the beasts engage in playful frolics before executing a majestic dance, symbolizing longevity, and bestowing blessings of good fortune upon all who witness their performance.
