Yoshihodayu Toyotake, Tomonosuke Tsuruzawa, Tamasuke Yoshida - Bunraku-za Company
Japan
Bunraku is a puppet theatre performed in a very unique format. It started more than 300 years ago and, like Noh and Kabuki, Bunraku is one of Japan's leading traditional arts. It is important to mention that the 3 puppeteers perform for 1 puppet and these puppeteers do that without expressing any words among themselves during the performance. It has an element of a music theatre in which the Tayu and Shamisen player play music called 'Gidayu-bushi' and the puppeteer performs and progresses the story. The Tayu alone delivers all the characters' lines, narrates the scene situations and expresses the emotions. The shamisen is not only an accompaniment, but also uses sound to describe the scene and the emotions of the characters through sound. The workshop introduces each of the above three elements of Bunraku, and in particular the puppets, explaining in detail not only how to operate them but also the structure of the puppets, as well as the actual puppet operation experience.
