Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui made his choreographic debut in 1999 with the musical Anonymous Society by Andrew Wale, and since then he has created over 50 choreographic moments that brought him numerous international awards. He has worked with theatres, opera houses and ballet companies, also setting up his own company, Eastman. Some of his best-known projects include a collaboration with director Joe Wright, for the choreography of the film Anna Karenina, of the performance Boléro (co-created alongside Damien Jalet and Marina Abramović) or Mercy (of Solo for Two) for Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev. At the same time, he directed his first opera show, Shell Shock, for La Monnaie, based on the music composed by Nicholas Lens and the text by Nick Cave. In 2015, he directed his first full theatre production, Pluto, based on the multi award-winner manga series by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki, and was involved in the creation of Hamlet by Lyndsey Turner, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Since 2015, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has been the artistic director of Royal Ballet Flanders, where he created Fall, Exhibition, and Requiem; moreover, he is an associated artist of Sadler’s Wells, London, and of Théâtre National de Bretagne, Rennes.
