Ion Caramitru was one of Romania’s most notable and appreciated theatre and film actors. He was born in 1942. In 1964, he got his degree in Drama at the Bucharest Institute of Theatre and Film “I.L. Caragiale”, and in 1975 he earned his MA in Theatre Directing from the same institution. Throughout his artistic career, he collaborated with some of the most relevant names of Romanian film and theatre, and was especially known for his exceptional interpretations of performances based on Shakespeare’s plays. Between 1976 and 1980, he was a drama professor at the Bucharest Academy of Theatre and Film. In 1990-1993, he was the general manager of Bucharest’s Bulandra Theatre. In 1990, he founded the Romanian Association of Theatre Artists (UNITER) and was voted President. In 2005-2021, he was the general manager of the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre in Bucharest. In 1996-2000, Ion Caramitru was the Minister of Culture. We shall remember him as one of the greatest poetry reciters in the history of Romanian theatre and radio.
Ion Caramitru died on 5 September 2021.
