This exhibition features approximately forty masks belonging to the oldest Noh theatre in Osaka – Yamamoto Noh Theater. Although they are often called “expressionless”, masks are the quintessential means of expression in the 7-century old tradition of Japan's classical Noh drama. A talented actor can convey a plethora of emotions simply by tilting the mask at a certain angle or combining that with a certain gesture. The exhibition will display the aesthetic and functional characteristics of the most popular masks within Noh's repertoire. Opening: 25.06.2022 at 16:00
